The Lord of the Rings is a preexisting novel that is published as three volumes, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, written by J. R. R. Tolkien, who had also written a prequel, The Hobbit, that is set in the same shared universe, only that the events in The Hobbit begins roughly eighty years earlier than the adventures of its sequels.

Importance to the Inkheart trilogy[]

When Mortimer and Meggie Folchart went to Elinor's house, the Lord of the Rings was one of the books Meggie chose to bring along, though it wasn't specified which volume.[citation needed] Later on, Meggie and Mo demonstrated using the elvish writing of the book to communicate secretly, proving they knew the series well enough.[1]
